Community Squeeze

As a rather non-technical advocate for Squeezebox, I had been vaguely aware that people who know how to do that sort of thing were working away at a development project called Community Squeeze. I decided it was time to take a look at the project to find out how things are going so I could include it in our list of DIY Squeeze player options.

I eventually found this Slimdevices forum ... only to discover that the project closed down last month. Oh dear. I'm not going to comment at all on the possible causes for the demise of the project. I just want to express regret, and my thanks for the hard work that many people put into this effort. They actually succeeded in delivering a solution, which some people are still using happily. Their first version was based on Triode's very stable and capable Squeezelite player running on a Wandboard. Needless to say the technical problems were small compared to other issues. You can read some of the discussion on the Slimdevices forum.

Community Squeeze was kicked off just over a year ago, with the stated aim ..."to continue the squeezebox open ecosystem and maintain availability of squeezebox compatible players now that Slimdevices/Logitech are no longer active in this market. It targets great audio quality at low cost with full integration to the existing Logitech Media Server based ecosystem."

A very worthwhile aim. It's sad that this particular endeavor seems (at least for now) to be over.
